Shake is an MP3 player that uses kinetic
energy to charge the battery. When the battery
runs out, it is recharged with a shake.
The design intention of Shake was to relate
technology to something we are familiar with
– in this case, a pocket watch. The operation
of a pocket watch relies on the physical winding action of the wearer. The Shake MP3 player is operated by a shaking motion. It is charged by shaking with the “hold” function turned on. With “hold” off, the user shakes the player to play and pause.
The design language and formal expression of
Shake are based on the established typology
of the pocket watch, which gives the user comfort in the familiarity of a personal device
carried in the pocket. Also familiar is the
experience of giving life to an electronic device
through the application of a physical action.
With the growing concern over environmental
issues, Shake serves as a concept for what
MP3 players could be like, and provides a
possible solution for MP3 players of the future.
